Frequently asked questions
-
What do you recommend for first-time students?Come for an ad-hoc consultation for your first session, or book a free 30-minute slot where we can discuss your learning needs and find out which option best suits you. I can curate a personalised syllabus with you and share with you what exactly constitutes the kind of insightful writing your teachers and examiners are looking out for.
-
Do you offer trial lessons? For first-time students, I offer a free 20-minute consult in which we cover together exactly what you need on this journey, and where I can give you feedback if you bring along any piece of writing so you can have a glimpse of what lessons with me could be like.
-
Why should I try out a session with you?A lesson with me can come in many forms, and most importantly, doesn’t come with any commitments – you could commit to a long-term session, or sign up for only one ad-hoc consultation, or come with your friends. The abundance of options, coupled with my experience at teaching students at different levels allows me to curate the best possible learning experience for you.
-
What goes on in a lesson? What methods do you use?Based on your specific needs and where you’re at in terms of content familiarisation and skill mastery, I craft a scaffolded set of objectives to achieve by the end of the lesson. Within the lesson itself, we will typically do targeted exercises to help you attain these objectives. By the end of the lesson, you would have produced a deliverable (e.g. a paragraph demonstrating a specific skill, annotations specific to literary device, self-commentary on your essay) that is demonstrable proof of the objectives we’ve attained together.
-
I don’t want to commit to long-term sessions. What options do you have for me?Try the ad-hoc consultation or the crash course package!

What can you teach?Over the course of the past six years, I’ve taught students of varying streams and ability levels in Literature, History and General Paper. My teaching experience and research experience at college level make me qualified to impart both the specific skills required for each subject as well as the critical reasoning and argumentation skills that will distinguish you from other students.
-
What does a literature student need?Literature is an incredibly skills-based discipline. Its unique orientation means that more conventional modes of studying (memorisation, repeated practice) may not bear as much fruit. What will accelerate your ability to perform well in Literature is understanding the various skillsets you need to employ for literature, and learning the best ways to practise effectively both in lessons and in your own revision. With these skillsets learned, you will be on your way to dazzling examiners with your erudition and insight.
-
What does a history student need?Much of the same skills that underpin literary writing and thinking benefit history students in a synergistic way. History however demands a much greater mastery and manipulation of content knowledge, to be absorbed and wielded with greatest effect. My lessons will cover both the argumentative and reasoning skills that are at the heart of my teaching practice and modes of navigating the deluge of historical content dextrously.
-
How would you be able to advise me on how to score well, given the varying standards across different schools and streams? It’s a rite of passage for every student of the humanities to encounter teachers with wildly different standards. Part of what we’ll do together is to clarify your teacher’s specific expectations and how to go about aligning your writing with them. At the same time, as we look forward towards the national and international standardised exams, I will also train you in both the essential and advanced skills you need to impress any examiner. In the lessons, we will look at what fundamentally underpins humanities assessment – you’ll emerge as a more confident learner, secure in the knowledge that you know exactly what you’re answering to when you put pen to paper.
-
Are there online options?Yes! I highly recommend opting for an online session, for which you will be given a discounted rate.
-
What are your rates?Drop me a message at @khaikyy to enquire about my rates!
-
Is there any way to get subsidised rates?Either opt for online lessons or come in a group with your friends (2 – 6 pax) to enjoy reduced rates.
-
What do I have to bring into a session?Just your questions, doubts and thoughts about what you’re studying – we’ll do the rest in-session.
-
Do you have practice papers?Yes, I have practice papers that run the gamut of difficulty levels, which we will work on together in a reflexive and intentional manner. It’s not entirely about how much you practice, but whether each practice session is helping you learn new skills, fortify old ones or discover new difficulties that we will overcome together.
-
Do you take on students outside Singapore?I teach primarily within the Singaporean education setting, but am more than happy to take on students from other contexts. The skills of the humanities are universal, and their reach is properly global. Drop me a text on telegram (@khaikyy) if you have any enquiries.

This all sounds good, but my problems in literature / history are very specific, and I’m not sure if this is the platform in which to address them. Not to worry, there is no problem that isn’t worth sharing, or that cannot be tackled and mitigated in some way. I operate from the belief that all students are able to excel in the humanities, with the right guidance. Over the years, privileging a student-centred approach has meant that I have had experience helping students with an assortment of issues, from memorising quotes, effective note-taking in class, optimising study time outside class, confronting the anxiety that comes with encountering an unseen poem or even the boredom of exam prep. Come down for a session, and we can chat about what kind of help you need in the subject.
-
What if I need more information?Feel free to contact me over telegram (@khaikyy) about any questions – or better yet, book a 30-minute chat with me to find out more!
